What it is

The piano is a struck string instrument: each key triggers a hammer that strikes one or more strings stretched over a metal frame, producing a note whose intensity depends directly on how fast the finger strikes. This mechanism gives the piano unmatched dynamic expressiveness, from the most delicate pianissimo to the most powerful fortissimo.

The acoustic piano (upright or grand), which produces sound mechanically, is distinct from the digital piano, which samples and electronically reproduces an acoustic piano's sound while offering portability and silent headphone practice.

Origins and history

Invented in Italy in the early 18th century by Bartolomeo Cristofori, the piano-forte ('soft-loud', unlike the harpsichord which can't vary volume) gradually became the central instrument of Western music before spreading worldwide, including Moroccan conservatories and music schools, where it holds a prominent place in classical teaching.

Manufacturing and materials

A quality acoustic piano combines a solid spruce soundboard, a cast-iron frame able to withstand several tonnes of string tension, and an action of several thousand parts regulated to within a tenth of a millimetre. A digital piano recreates this playing feel through a weighted keyboard action and a bank of sounds sampled from real concert pianos.

How to choose the right one

  • Available space: an upright or digital piano suits tighter spaces; a grand piano needs a dedicated room.
  • Budget and upkeep: digital pianos need no regular tuning, unlike acoustics.
  • Touch: choose a weighted-action keyboard ('heavy keys') to build real technique, even on a digital.
  • Use case: silent headphone practice, stage, studio or living room each point to a different family.

How it's played

The piano is played seated, both hands on the keyboard, the feet operating the pedals to sustain or soften the sound. Its versatility makes it the base instrument for harmony (chords), melody (note lines) and often composition too, which explains its central place in both classical and modern music education.

Care and maintenance

An acoustic piano should be tuned once or twice a year by a technician, and kept away from direct heat and humidity sources. A digital piano only needs regular dusting and protection from power surges.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an acoustic and a digital piano?+

An acoustic piano produces sound mechanically (real hammers and strings) and needs regular tuning; a digital piano samples that sound electronically, never goes out of tune, and lets you play silently through headphones.

Which piano should I choose to start learning?+

An 88-key digital piano with a weighted action is often recommended for beginners: it faithfully reproduces the feel of an acoustic keyboard while staying more affordable and quiet.
