Moroccan Derbouka — Handmade Goblet Drum

The derbouka is the defining percussion of Moroccan celebrations — weddings, Chaâbi nights, family parties. Its deep bass strokes (doum) and sharp slaps (tak) drive the rhythm from start to finish.

What it is

The derbouka is a goblet-shaped drum, larger and deeper than the taarija, with a body available in turned wood, fired clay or metal (aluminium, copper) depending on the model. Its membrane, stretched across the wide top opening, is struck bare-handed to produce two main sounds: the deep, round doum at the centre, and the bright, sharp tak at the rim.

Origins and history

Widespread across the Arab world under various names (darbuka, tabla), the derbouka holds a central place in Moroccan Chaâbi music — the festive popular genre born in the 1970s that now drives the vast majority of Moroccan weddings and family celebrations. It also accompanies some styles close to the Gnawa repertoire and urban party music.

Handcrafted the traditional way

Wooden bodies are turned and hollowed into the characteristic goblet shape, then sanded and sometimes decorated with inlaid or painted patterns. Metal models are pressed then polished, offering better resistance to humidity — a popular choice for heavy use or a European climate. The membrane, natural or synthetic depending on the model, is tensioned mechanically (tuning screws) on modern versions, or by traditional lacing on classic ones.

How to choose the right one

  • Metal vs wood body: metal resists humidity better (recommended for France, Belgium or the UK); wood gives a warmer tone.
  • Tuning system: a screw-tensioned model lets you re-tighten the head yourself without an artisan's help.
  • Weight: for extended standing use (parties, processions), choose a lightweight aluminium model.
  • Synthetic membrane: more stable over time and unaffected by humidity — recommended for frequent use.

How it's played

Tucked under the arm or between the legs while seated, the derbouka is played bare-handed: the dominant hand alternates deep centre strokes (doum) and bright rim strokes (tak), while the other hand can add rim ornaments. This basic rhythmic vocabulary, expanded into complex patterns, forms the backbone of most Chaâbi and popular Moroccan rhythms.

Care and maintenance

For a natural-membrane model, avoid excess humidity and re-adjust tension via the lacing or screw system as needed. For a metal body, a simple wipe-down suffices; for a wood body, avoid prolonged thermal shocks. Always store the instrument dust-free in its case.

Also known as darbuka in other Arab countries; our models are made in Morocco following local craftsmanship.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose wood or metal for a derbouka?+

Metal (aluminium) is recommended for a humid climate like France or Belgium, as it resists humidity changes better than wood or clay; wood offers a warmer, more traditional tone in return.

Is the derbouka beginner-friendly?+

Yes, it's one of the most accessible Moroccan percussion instruments to start with, and plenty of tutorials online teach the basic doum and tak strokes.

How do I re-tighten the membrane if the sound goes dull?+

On screw models, gradually and evenly tighten each screw around the metal ring. On traditional laced models, contact us for personalised advice or a re-tensioning service.

Do you offer carrying cases for the derbouka?+

Yes, a padded case matching your model's size is available in our Accessories section.
